3 GOLD Star Awards for Hawkshead Relish

Hawkshead Relish has taken 3 GOLD Great Taste awards from the Guild of Fine Food for their popular preserves

2 NEW products only launched by this multi award winning company last month have immediately succeeded in striking Gold. Ripping Raspberry Curd took a 2 Star Gold with the Hot Onion and Red Pepper Relish taking a 1 Star

Westmorland Chutney named after the old county is the best selling traditional pickle which was one of the first culinary creations to emerge from this renowned Lakeland company has been awarded with a 1 Star Gold.

These latest Great Taste awards brings the total accumulated by Hawkshead Relish company to 54, making this Lake District based company one of the most accredited speciality producers in the UK.

The Guild of Fine Food underpins the British speciality food sector, with the recognised Great Taste awards for produce that surpasses excellence in quality, taste and innovation.

Rigorous Judging

For 2015, over 8000 products were judged over an intense two-month period. The Awards’ organiser, the Guild of Fine Food constantly refines the judging mechanics and this year was no exception. Before gold is awarded, a minimum of eight experts, often 16 taste, discuss and agree. For two- or three-stars, up to 20 judges must unanimously agree an entry has achieved absolute perfection. Over 350 experts including key buyers, retailers, chefs and food writers blind tasted entries to ensure they are fairly and independently assessed. Every entry starts with 25 points and marks are deducted when faults are identified and constructive feedback offers suggestions to the producers how entries could be improved

History and ethos of the business.

The Hawkshead Relish Company was founded following the foot & mouth epidemic when Mark and Maria found their cafe devoid of customers and their livelihood threatened.

 

They looked to their skills and passions creating a small range of high quality handmade Relishes, Pickles and Preserves taking them to local shops. Within a few years they had won many awards and the cafe was closed to make space for production, which today is housed in lovely 16thC barn overlooking Esthwaite water just a mile from Hawkshead Village.

 

The couple remain adamant that their business remains sustainable and provides employment for local people who often have to move away from the area to find work.  They are keen champions for the food producers in Cumbria and although not available in the big supermarkets the Hawkshead Relish brand can be found at many small independent stockists throughout the UK and in the last few years they have successfully exported to over 20 countries worldwide.

 

The range which has expanded to almost 130 products is still made by hand using traditional open pans and without any additives, preservatives or flavourings, and to date have secured over 40 national and international awards.
