Pumping Station in Hawkshead -Works stop after unusual find
The new waste water pumping station currently under construction at Hawkshead Esthwaite has come to a stop due to an unexpected find whilst drilling at the lakeshore site.
The works have been ongoing at the site at Foldgate since the start of the year and plan to continue until 2012, however recent developments have stopped the drilling whilst a team of scientists are called in to review the findings unearthed some 60 meters down. Initially the work was slowed down as unexpected bedrock caused some drilling issues, below which a new layer of a rich dark sweet smelling substance has been located.
Links to the nearby Hawkshead Relish Company HQ have not been ruled out and initial readings show a distinct similarity to the Westmorland Chutney - made using fruits, vegetables and spices which were once traded through to Hawkshead on the back of the wool trade from the west coast ports. It is considered that this may in fact be a layer of the original spiced chutney which has been brewing slowly for millennia undre the rocks that surround the valley of Esthwaite. The scientists have taken samples for their lunch and will be reporting back after several comparisons have been made.
For further information regarding this strange phenomenon please phone the environment agency on 01042010 the telephones will be manned up to 12noon only.
